I grew up in Illinois and started dancing when I was 5 years old. Growing up I enjoyed all styles of dance but enjoyed Jazz and Lyrical the most. I moved to Arizona in 2002 to attend ASU for my undergraduate degree and majored in dance and family studies. While in college I taught at a studio in Scottsdale and was a part of a college company that performed and competed throughout the valley. After graduating I searched for a studio that had adult dance classes with no luck, so I began practicing yoga as well as Pilates. I began working for a student housing company that manages housing for ASU in 2007 while completing my master’s degree in education from Northern Arizona university. In the fall of 2010 (or 2011 I can’t remember J) I was referred to Studio BFF by a friend and joined immediately after my first Ballerobica class! I love Studio BFF and have tried just about every class there is to offer. I decided to get certified so that I can continue to practice and teach Ballerobica once I move to Italy in June. I will miss the studio greatly but am excited for this new adventure.

My entire life I have been captivated by the beauty of our bodies ability to exert itself physically. As a girl my love for ballet transcended all else and for 12 years it was my passion. In contrast I later found pleasure in the action & power of competitive soccer and track, and years later the focus and brut force of weight training captured my attention. Over the last 10 years the gentleness of yoga has nurtured me and in the last couple of years Qi Gong and Tai Chi have moved and inspired me. No matter the physical activity I have engaged in Ballet has always colored my expression. I am grateful that Ballerobica has brought the grace and strength of Ballet back into my life & it is an even greater pleasure to be teaching it!

A lover of movement since birth, Ellen Mathewson, began her studies of dance at the age of 4. Disciplined in a pre-professional ballet program, she learned early about dedication to craft and excellence. As a teenager, after experiencing the freedom of jazz and hip hop dance, Ellen then turned her attention to cheerleading. She received the designation of Oregon All-State cheerleader as well as All-American cheerleader through the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA). She then went on to instruct for the NCA and the National Dance Alliance (NDA) teaching camps for high school teams throughout the nation. After discovering her natural strength ability in a high school strength training class, she competed in powerlifting competitions, where she was the 1999 Oregon High School Squat Champion. Moving to California for school, Ellen was asked to instruct for a chain of fitness clubs in Step aerobics and kickboxing.
As an adult, Ellen rediscovered her love of dance, instructing studio ballet, hip hop, and choreography classes. Passionate about her health and fitness goals, Ellen strives to balance those with her family life. As a mother, making healthy decisions for her family is of the upmost importance. With a motivation and a drive towards excellence, Ellen’s personal workouts are tailored towards high intensity movements, while her training style for her clients are focused on the individual’s needs. She has trained nationally recognized figure competitors, but has also helped obese individuals lose up to 39 ½ inches! She currently works at four fitness facilities as well as in client’s homes.
